A summer of works serving the mobility of tomorrow

As in previous years, the CFL will take advantage of the summer school holidays to carry out maintenance and modernisation works on the Luxembourg rail network. During this period, characterised by lower train usage and greater availability of buses required to implement a replacement service, train traffic will be interrupted or adapted on several lines:
  • Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz
  • Luxembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange
  • Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy
  • Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier
  • Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon
In order to allow customers to continue their journeys during the works, the CFL, in collaboration with their German, Belgian and French partners, have put in place a substantial replacement bus offer. This offer mobilises around 200 drivers and provides nearly 1,000 services per day during the summer works period. Additionally, customers may also make use of buses from the RGTR and TICE networks.

To find out the details of individual journeys, customers are requested to perform a timetable search on cfl.lu or via the CFL go or mobiliteit.lu applications. Due to potential disruptions related to road traffic, the CFL recommend that customers allow additional travel time, which may vary depending on the day and the chosen line.
 

Luxembourg – Thionville: no trains from Thursday 16 July 2026 to Sunday 23 August 2026 inclusive

Alternatives put in place
Due to uncertainties related to road traffic, the CFL ask customers to allow an increase in travel time of approximately 45 minutes between Thionville and Luxembourg.
  • Bus L90 Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) – Bettembourg – Hettange-Grande – Thionville
    • The buses serve all stops usually served by train to/from Thionville
    • Peak hours: departure every 30 minutes
    • Off-peak hours: departure every hour
    • Morning peak: additional departures from Hettange-Grande towards Luxembourg
  • Bus L91 Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) – Howald, PE Howald – Thionville (direct)
    • Departure every 20 to 30 minutes (Monday to Friday)
    • Hourly departures (Saturday)
    • During peak hours, some L91 buses operate only between Thionville and PE Howald
  • Bus L92 (direct) Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) – Thionville
    • Peak hours only: departures every 5 to 10 minutes
  • TGV bus (reserved for TGV customers)
    • According to TGV timetable for departures from Metz station

The Howald intermodal hub on the home straight

Following completion of the new platform at Howald and the commissioning of both platforms since March 2026, works at this new rail hub in the south of the capital are now entering the final phase.
The summer period will allow the installation of two escalators of 24 tonnes per platform, facilitating access to the tram/bus interchange spanning the railway tracks. Works on platform canopies will also be completed.
The closure will also enable completion of access paths reserved for CFL staff for maintenance purposes.
Full commissioning of the Howald intermoldal hub, including the bus station and tram stop, is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026.

Construction of the new Luxembourg – Bettembourg line continues

Works are also continuing on the new additional line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg, with commissioning planned from September 2027.
The closure period will allow platform works on a final 250-metre section north of Bettembourg station. These works are part of preparations for connecting the new line at Bettembourg station in 2027.
They include works on the substructure between natural ground and ballast, crucial for track stability, as well as installation of drainage systems to evacuate rainwater.
The closure will also enable installation of an underpass north of Bettembourg station connecting the two sides of the town beneath the tracks.
In parallel, works will continue on power supply (overhead lines) and signalling systems.
The new line is part of the CFL Group’s strategic projects to significantly increase network capacity on its busiest section.

Track renewal on various sections

Tracks will be renewed between Livange and Berchem over 300 metres, including: 1,280 m of rails, more than 1,000 sleepers, 1,800 tonnes of ballast.Further sleeper replacements will take place between Bettembourg and Dudelange over 450 metres.

    • As an alternative, customers on the Rumelange – Noertzange line are asked to use RGTR and TICE bus services.

Track renewal on various sections

In order to continue to guarantee the safe circulation of trains, the tracks will be fully renewed between Cinqfontaines and Troisvierges over a total length of 2.6 km. The works will involve the replacement of 5,200 m of rails, 4,300 sleepers, as well as the renewal and redistribution of 11,500 tonnes of ballast.
The track will also be renewed between Kautenbach and the Paradiso stop over a total length of 1.1 km.

Securing rock faces and maintenance of stops

The suspension of train traffic will also allow the CFL and their subcontractors to secure the rock faces along the exceptional topography of the Northern line. Falling rocks onto the tracks will thus be prevented through the installation of metal nets over a length of 300 metres. The closure will also allow repair, refurbishment and cleaning works at various stops and stations located on the Northern line.

Luxembourg – Igel: no trains from Monday 24 August 2026 to Monday 14 September 2026 (04:00)

Wasserbillig – Igel: no trains from Monday 14.09.2026 and Monday 21.09.2026 (04:00)


Alternatives put in place
To enable the execution of major maintenance works, rail traffic between Luxembourg and Germany will be interrupted during the period from 24 August to 14 September 2026. The CFL are currently working on putting in place a replacement bus service allowing affected customers to continue their journey by bus, or partially by train on certain sections of the route. Detailed information regarding the various replacement buses and the trains that will continue to operate will be available no later than 10 August 2026 on cfl.lu or via journey planners in the CFL go and mobiliteit.lu applications.

A facelift for the German–Luxembourg border crossing

In order to continue to ensure railway safety, the border bridge between Luxembourg and Germany at Wasserbillig will be refurbished by CFL teams in close collaboration with DB InfraGo AG. These works will in particular include the removal and relaying of tracks, structural repair works, renewal of waterproofing on the deck as well as the drainage system, and the restoration of the natural stone masonry in the abutment areas.

11.4 km of track renewed

The closure period will also be used to renew a double-track section of 5.7 km between Wecker and Fausermillen. These works will require the use of a track renewal train to replace a total of 11.4 km of tracks, 19,000 sleepers, as well as part of the ballast (7,000 tonnes). Maintenance works will also continue between Wecker and Roodt-sur-Syre with the renewal of access paths (ensuring safe access for CFL staff to railway infrastructure) and cable ducts containing telecommunications and signalling cables. It should be noted that the summer period will also allow cleaning and refurbishment works at various stations and stops.

Kleinbettingen – Arlon: no trains between Monday 6 July and Friday 10 July 2026 inclusive

Trains will continue to operate every 30 minutes between Luxembourg and Kleinbettingen (adapted timetable). A replacement bus service between Kleinbettingen and Arlon is provided by SNCB.
IC trains to and from Brussels-Midi will be replaced by buses between Luxembourg and Arlon.

Luxembourg – Arlon: no trains from 4 to 5 July 2026 and from 11 to 12 July 2026

During the period from 13 to 20 July 2026, the train timetable on the Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon line will be adapted due to the works carried out.

Luxembourg – Arlon: fewer trains from Monday 20 July 2026 to Sunday 9 August 2026 inclusive

During the period from 20 July to 9 August 2026, fewer trains will run on the Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon line.
During periods of rail traffic interruption, refurbishment and track renewal works will be carried out by Infrabel on the Belgian rail network near the Belgian–Luxembourg border crossing.
