The transformation of the Howald transport hub continues
During the summer, construction of the second 307-metre platform, including access to the tram and the surrounding bus station, will continue in Howald. The new platform will be equipped with a heated shelter, passenger information screens and the necessary electrical connections. Once completed, the new platform will be connected to the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. The first platform is being taken out of service to allow preparatory work to be carried with regards to connecting Howald to the new line under construction between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. This requires the removal of 2,650 metres of track, 4,420 sleepers and the adaptation of the power supply, signalling and telecommunications installations.
Continuation of construction of the new line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg (NBS)
The NBS plays an important role in improving punctuality on the country's busiest section (Bettembourg – Luxembourg). The two seven-kilometre tracks will provide additional capacity to separate train traffic on the Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange and Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz lines, while offering opportunities to improve the train service (more trains to/from France; direct train between Volmerange-les-Mines and Luxembourg).
During the summer of 2025, no less than 500 metres of track on the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg will be relocated to make room for part of the NBS tracks from 2026 onwards. To accommodate the new route, the substructure, the ducts (containing the signalling and telecommunications cables) and the over headline installations will also be renewed or relocated. To prepare for the laying of the NBS tracks, more than 200 rigid inclusions, stabilising the platform, are being installed upstream of the ‘flyover’ bridge, which will carry the NBS over the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. 150 metres of noise barriers are also being installed to limit noise pollution from rail traffic.
Continuing adaptation works at Luxembourg Station
Located at the centre of a star-shaped network, Luxembourg Station is a real hub where all train lines converge. To limit the number of trains from different lines crossing each other, which can cause delays, Luxembourg Station has been undergoing a complete transformation since 2018. The transformation of Luxembourg Station will reach another important milestone with the adaptation of platform IV (serving tracks 9 and 10) and various points. Ultimately, each train line will have its own dedicated track in the capital's station.
Renewal of six kilometres of track between Berchem and Howald
During the summer, the CFL are renewing three tracks over a total length of six kilometres between Berchem and Howald stations. In addition to replacing more than 10,000 sleepers with concrete sleepers that have a longer service life (+/-40 years), the track bed is also being renewed, as are the drainage system for rainwater, the cable ducts and the access tracks reserved for CFL staff.
