Summer works on four lines

In order to continue to guarantee the impeccable condition of the railway infrastructure and meet growing mobility needs, four lines will be affected by works during various periods between 11 July and 14 September 2025 (inclusive):
  • Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange line from 11 July to 14 September 2025
  • Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz line from 11 July to 14 September 2025
  • Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy line from 19 July to 10 August 2025
  • Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier line from 23 August to 14 September 2025
These works will be carried out during school holidays, when there are fewer passengers and more buses are available to provide alternative services. More than 200 drivers have been hired to operate over 1,100 daily services during the summer.

To avoid overcrowding at Luxembourg bus station due to the replacement buses, other departure and arrival stations that are easily accessible by public transport have been designated within the city of Luxembourg: Gare Rocade (Bonnevoie), Boulevard Paul Eyschen (Limpertsberg) and Luxexpo (Kirchberg).

Customers who are affected by the construction work can also use the bus services of the Régime général de Transport routier (RGTR) as an alternative. Details of the replacement buses are available in the timetable search at www.cfl.lu or via the CFL mobile or Mobiliteit.lu apps. The CFL ask their customers to allow for an additional 25 to 45 minutes for their journey.

The transformation of the Howald transport hub continues

During the summer, construction of the second 307-metre platform, including access to the tram and the surrounding bus station, will continue in Howald. The new platform will be equipped with a heated shelter, passenger information screens and the necessary electrical connections. Once completed, the new platform will be connected to the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. The first platform is being taken out of service to allow preparatory work to be carried with regards to connecting Howald to the new line under construction between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. This requires the removal of 2,650 metres of track, 4,420 sleepers and the adaptation of the power supply, signalling and telecommunications installations.

Continuation of construction of the new line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg (NBS)

The NBS plays an important role in improving punctuality on the country's busiest section (Bettembourg – Luxembourg). The two seven-kilometre tracks will provide additional capacity to separate train traffic on the Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange and Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz lines, while offering opportunities to improve the train service (more trains to/from France; direct train between Volmerange-les-Mines and Luxembourg).

During the summer of 2025, no less than 500 metres of track on the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg will be relocated to make room for part of the NBS tracks from 2026 onwards. To accommodate the new route, the substructure, the ducts (containing the signalling and telecommunications cables) and the over headline installations will also be renewed or relocated. To prepare for the laying of the NBS tracks, more than 200 rigid inclusions, stabilising the platform, are being installed upstream of the ‘flyover’ bridge, which will carry the NBS over the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. 150 metres of noise barriers are also being installed to limit noise pollution from rail traffic.

Continuing adaptation works at Luxembourg Station

Located at the centre of a star-shaped network, Luxembourg Station is a real hub where all train lines converge. To limit the number of trains from different lines crossing each other, which can cause delays, Luxembourg Station has been undergoing a complete transformation since 2018. The transformation of Luxembourg Station will reach another important milestone with the adaptation of platform IV (serving tracks 9 and 10) and various points. Ultimately, each train line will have its own dedicated track in the capital's station.

Renewal of six kilometres of track between Berchem and Howald

During the summer, the CFL are renewing three tracks over a total length of six kilometres between Berchem and Howald stations. In addition to replacing more than 10,000 sleepers with concrete sleepers that have a longer service life (+/-40 years), the track bed is also being renewed, as are the drainage system for rainwater, the cable ducts and the access tracks reserved for CFL staff.

Continuing to maintain the network for everyone's safety

Various maintenance and modernisation works are being carried out on the Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy line to continue to ensure the safety and comfort of CFL staff and customers. Outside the ‘Schueberfouer’ period, this work includes the renewal of 6 km of track between Walferdange and Lorentzweiler to continue to ensure the safety of staff and customers on the Northern Line. Twelve kilometres of track, more than 10,000 sleepers and 14,000 tonnes of ballast that have reached the end of their service life are being replaced using a renewal train. To optimise the power supply after the new substation in Flebour came into service in 2024, various adjustments are still being made to the power supply system.

Maintaining the substance of the network and continuing to remove level-crossings

Train services are suspended on the Luxembourg section of the Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier line for the renewal of more than 13 kilometres of track and 22,000 sleepers. As part of the removal of level crossing PN59 in Milbech, two prefabricated concrete elements are being moved (ripped) under the railway line to allow road and pedestrian traffic to be diverted after the level crossing is permanently closed in 2026. After the relocation, the track will be renewed over a length of 200 metres above the relocated elements. On average, the CFL remove between one and two level-crossings per year, which are potentially dangerous points of intersection between the road and rail networks.
