We are working for your mobility of tomorrow
Removal of Level Crossings, Continued Work at Howald intermodal hub and the New Luxembourg – Bettembourg Line
During the All Saints’ holiday, from Saturday 1st November to Sunday 9th November 2025, the CFL will carry out works requiring train traffic interruptions on various sections of the railway network. These interventions will mainly support projects related to the removal of two level crossings and the connection of the Howald interchange to the future new Luxembourg – Bettembourg line (NBS). To allow for these works to be carried out, no trains will run in either direction between Luxembourg and Bettembourg, as well as between Luxembourg and Ettelbruck, and Luxembourg and Diekirch. The CFL will provide replacement bus services. To find out more about these alternatives, CFL invites its customers to consult www.cfl.lu or use the CFL mobile and mobiliteit.lu apps.
Please note that passengers affected by the works can also take advantage of many regular bus line alternatives.
Line Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy
From 01/11 to 09/11/2025 (inclusive): No trains between Luxembourg and Ettelbruck or between Luxembourg and Diekirch
Alternatives:
Bus L10 Limpertsberg (Boulevard Paul Eyschen) – Ettelbruck
- Departure every 30 minutes
- Easily accessible via tram (Theater stop)
- Serves all train stops between Luxembourg and Ettelbruck, including Diekirch
- Peak: every 15 minutes / Off-peak: every 30 minutes
- During peak hours, some of these bus services do not serve Ettelbruck. During these times, the CFL advise customers traveling to or from Ettelbruck to use bus line L12 instead.

- Monday to Friday: every 30 minutes
- Easily accessible via tram (Luxexpo stop)
Safety is the CFL’s top priority for both its customers and staff. The removal of level crossings—intersections between road and rail networks that can be dangerous if traffic rules are not followed—is a key part of this commitment.
During the All Saints’ holidays, work will focus on a level crossing on the Northern Line:
Works Related to the Removal of Level Crossing PN13 in Dommeldange
Closed permanently to road and pedestrian traffic since June 7, 2025, the Dommeldange level crossing site continues its transformation. This includes the future construction of a new underpass for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as adjustments to the surrounding infrastructure. During the holiday period, the CFL will carry out work on the tracks, catenary systems, and technical installations to adapt the infrastructure to the new site layout.
Works Related to the Removal of Level Crossing PN118a in Colmar-Usines
This autumn, the CFL are also beginning work to remove a crossing on the freight-only line between Ettelbruck and Bissen. In Colmar-Usines, construction is planned for a new barrier-free underpass for pedestrians and cyclists. During the All Saints’ holidays, the first phase will involve placing concrete structural elements of the underpass beneath the tracks.
Each year, one to two level crossings are removed and replaced with infrastructure that separates road and rail traffic. On average, the full process—from analysis to completion—takes about ten years.
Maintenance Works
Due to adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall, restoration and cleaning work will be carried out on the railway infrastructure between Mersch and Ettelbruck during the All Saints’ holidays. These additional works are the reason why the originally planned closure between Luxembourg and Mersch has been extended to include the Luxembourg – Ettelbruck/Diekirch section.

Continued Work at Howald intermodal hub and the New Line Route
Following major works carried out over the summer at Howald station (2.7 km of renewed tracks, 13 switches installed, and the opening of the new 307-meter-long platform II on 15 September 2025), the CFL are continuing railway construction as part of the transformation of the site into a multimodal interchange and its connection to the future Luxembourg – Bettembourg line.
After platform I at Howald was taken out of service during the summer, the CFL are continuing work to connect it to the future route of the new Luxembourg – Bettembourg line (NBS). CFL will take advantage of the track closure during the All Saints’ holidays to install four new switches and 900 meters of track that will link the Howald interchange to the spectacular OA14 engineering structure, which spans the A3 motorway.
On the Luxembourg – Bettembourg new line side, CFL teams and subcontractors will continue work related to the new route. Among the tasks scheduled during the All Saints’ holidays is the distribution of 18,000 tonnes of ballast over a length of 1.8 km. This layer of ballast, known as “pre-ballasting,” forms the final layer of natural stone on which the tracks of the future line will be laid. Additional finishing works (fencing, foundations for noise barriers, water retention basins) will be carried out in parallel.
