The medieval city of Vianden

Vianden was a fortified town, nestled at the foot of the castle which dominated and protected it. In the Middle Ages, it was the capital of the mighty county of Vianden, which included 135 villages and extended to Prum and Bitbourg and was as large as the present Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Built from the 11th to the 14th century on the foundations of a Roman fort and a Carolingian shelter, Vianden Castle is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe.

The extraordinary silhouette of this castle is the result of an almost total restoration in the 20th century after the original, built between the 11th and 14th centuries, fell into complete ruin. The aisles of the lower levels display different layers of occupation, starting from Roman times. The open-air Byzantine Hall is a wonderful space, while the Gothic polygonal chapel is built around a central well. In addition, the rooms feature beautiful tapestries from Flanders, while photo galleries show the reconstruction process and famous visitors.

Over time famous figures have appreciated the charm of Vianden such as Queen Elisabeth of England, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, President of the French Council Robert Schuman and President of the Federal Republic of Germany Gustav Heinemann, etc.
