On the occasion of the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD), CFL and the Police carried out a joint action on Thursday, 5 June from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at level crossing PN21 in Lintgen to remind the public of essential safety rules.
With 105 level crossings still in operation in Luxembourg, it remains crucial to follow these key rules without exception:
Stop as soon as the red lights flash and/or the audible signal sounds near the level crossing.
In case of traffic jams, wait in front of the open barriers until you can fully and continuously cross the level crossing. This prevents your vehicle from getting stuck on the tracks.
If you are stuck on the tracks, break through the barriers with your vehicle. Breakaway points are designed to allow you to exit the danger zone.
If you see a vehicle stuck on the tracks, call 112 and provide the number of the level crossing, which is displayed nearby.
Reminder: A train’s braking distance can be up to 1,200 meters. Even if the train driver sees your vehicle, an emergency brake is rarely enough to avoid a collision.
Over the past ten years, 5 fatalities and 14 accidents have been recorded, often due to violations of the Highway Code.
Tracks are for trains, not for people
On 4 June 2025, CFL also reminded the public to keep a safe distance from the tracks and never to enter the railway area.
In 2024, CFL staff observed 800 people who either crossed or walked along the tracks illegally – extremely dangerous situations, as confirmed by the latest figures from the European Union Agency for Railways.
Nearly two-thirds of fatal accidents on European railway tracks are due to unauthorized presence on or near the tracks.
Even if your train is waiting on the opposite platform and you're in a hurry – never cross the tracks. Use the underpass. Your life depends on it.
