Culture and heritage
Luxembourg counts more than sixty museums which reflect its diversity, multiculturalism and its historical wealth. Its fairytale castles and impressive architecture offer a glimpse into the country’s medieval past and feature cultural sites that are not to be missed. Simultaneously, Luxembourg presents a range of events and contemporary landscapes rhythming its days. We have collected interesting addresses which are easy to access by train.
In Clervaux:
Built in the 12th century and restored after its destruction in 1944 during the Ardennes battle, the castle of Clervaux contains a handful of institutions and museums. These explain the story of this building and one in particular stands out: “The Family of Man” is the most known exhibition and is also classified in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It portrays a collection of photos assembled by Edward Steichen, initially for the “Museum of Modern Art” in New York, which calls for peace and equality in a post-war era.
In Wiltz:
The Wiltz Castle was constructed by the lords of Wiltz in the 13th century in search of a strategic location after multiple attacks by enemies. This castle now offers insight into the history of beer production over 6 centuries with its first ever National Museum of brewing art. Additionally, the Museum of the Ardennes battle describes the history of the martyr undergone during the winter of 1944/45 in an interactive setting.
In Kirchberg, Luxembourg:
During the last decade, Luxembourg has seen a massive development in its architecture especially in the Plateau of Kirchberg which is an ancient farming area. You’ll stumble upon multiple works of art by renown architects and artists on the streets and in front of the buildings. Whether it is the Philharmonie, the statue in front of Arendt & Medernach or the Chair statue, everything is designed to amaze you. Parcs and gardens nearby are perfect for a break in the open air. This combination gives the neighbourhood a special charm that leaves a lasting impression. To round off your visit, take a detour to the Dräi Eechelen Museum or the Museum of Modern Art (Mudam) if you are an art lover.
In Esch-sur-Alzette:
Discover Luxembourg’s mining history with the “Minett Tour” in Esch-Belval to visit the blast furnaces from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the south of the country. To further explore the mining world, you’ll be led to the Fond-de-Gras site where a ride in the steam locomotive named “Train 9000”, once used to transport iron ore charging, awaits you. Next stop: the tunnels of Lasauvage where miners spent their days extracting iron ore. This 35 km tour allows visitors to put themselves in the shoes of a former miner.
