Since 19 December 2006, CFL cargo is operating its first international « open access » freight train between Luxemburg and France.
This transport of cold-rolled coils between the factories of ArcelorMittal Florange (F) and Bettembourg (L) represents a yearly volume of the order of 117,000 t, which is shifting from truck to train.
On average, three weekly trains with 14 Shimms wagons each shuttle between the train stations of Ebange and Bettembourg. In a first phase, the trains will be pulled by a diesel locomotive from the 1800 series.
In cooperation with a French training institute, an organization licensed by the EPSF (public institution for train safety in France), an extensive training programme was developed to include all impacted security aspects.
This new border-crossing traffic certainly represents an important phase in the international development of CFL cargo.
